Though I have not ever been in a serious auto collision, I have been in one that could have been significant had things been just a little different. I consider myself fortunate, and I hope this is not a thing that I ever have to go through, and I hope no one in my family has that sort of bad luck either. Nobody wants to go through an automobile accident; you need to know it is a possibility. I worry about them the most in winter. We live in a place where everybody thinks they can handle the snow, and they go rushing through it as if they were invincible. They are frequently proven wrong.

It appeared there was a rash of accidents when I was a teenager. It might have been that people did not have lots of money and bought chiefly used cars - and while used cars can be completely safe, purchasing used cars will never be entirely as reliable as buying new vehicles. I lived in a very small town, and our graduating classes averaged less than one hundred students every year. Everybody pretty much knew everyone else, and this wasn't just constrained to those in your class. It seemed that every year there was at least one fatal auto collision, and it was always fatal. The saddest part was that each auto collision seemed to be related to drinking. There was not much else to do in our town, so everyone drank. Lots of people in my school died due to it.

I can't say I was much better. Though I didn't drive, I did ride around with people who had done so. I was not what you would call a dull person either. Teenagers know the dangers of an auto collision but they just don't suppose it can happen to them. I just not ever thought I was in danger, and I was lucky that the only automobile accident I was in was quite minor, and equally lucky in that no-one got hurt. Icy highways were to blame for that crash, and thankfully no one had been drinking.

If you fret about your children being involved in an automobile accident, you have a right to worry. The smartest teens in the world make some poor options. That's all a part of growing up. You need to warn them of the dangers of drinking and being in a motor vehicle, and you have to let them know that an auto collision can happen at any time. This might not be enough though, and that means you have to ensure you know where your children are and what they are doing at all times. This may mean making them stay home when their friends are out. They might say they dislike you for it, but it's all part of being a good parent. Personally, I would prefer a mad kid to a dead child.
